Does Your Tiny House Product Or Service Need Certification?

SEI is a subsidiary of ASTM International is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) in accordance with ISO/IEC 17065, Conformity assessment – Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes, and services.

All product model testing is conducted is accordance with globally-recognized product standards from organizations like ASTM International, ANSI/ANAB, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the U.S. National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and the National Operating Committee on Standards and Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE).

New ASTM Building Standards For Tiny Houses

At this time, we are exploring an initiative to develop new ASTM building standards for tiny houses. Standards will include, tiny houses on wheels, foundations for tiny houses, certification, tiny house communities and Micro-Grid Utilities.

Meet Tricia Hock At The Next Meeting

Tricia Hock, a Director in charge of  Certification Operations with SEI will be giving a short presentation on our next call on July 27th, 2021 at 5PM EST to introduce the certification and accreditation services of SEI to the tiny house stakeholders that our supporting the ASTM Tiny House Initiative.

Tricia is going to introduce the certification services that SEI could provide for a tiny house related product or service, working in tandem with new building standards for the tiny house industry.

How SEI Works

Stage One- Application And Documentation

– Submit SEI certification application.

– Remit payment of all SEI fees (one-time application fee, annual participation and model fee, product testing fee, initial quality audit fee).

– Submit a copy of product liability insurance to demonstrate adequate coverage. Include endorsement form to add SEI as additional insured for products/completed operations.

– Complete and submit a product submittal form for each model that will be certified, including product description(s).

– Arrange for test samples to be sent directly to the appropriate test laboratory along with a copy of the submittal form.

Stage Two-Testing And Approvals

– SEI completes product testing and initial quality audit.

– SEI confirms which products are compliant and may bear the SEI certification mark.

– Apply SEI mark to your product(s)

Stage Three- Audits And Maintenance

– Perform periodic testing to confirm continued compliance to applicable standard.

– Participate in annual surveillance audits to verify continued compliance of the manufacturer’s quality system.

– Select samples to represent each certified model and submit to SEI laboratory for annual certification testing.

– Remit annual fees (surveillance audits, annual re-certification product testing, annual participation, annual certification per model).

– Notify SEI of any changes to the certified product or quality systems. Any changes will be assessed by SEI and the manufacturer will be notified of any required actions.
