ASTM Tiny House Subcommittee Goes To Ballot Under E6

We Overcame The ICC Objection!

On Sept. 15th, 2022, there was a hearing with COTCO, the governing board of ASTM International that grants new committees, representatives from the International Code Council ( ICC ), and proponents in support of new tiny house standards with ASTM.

The ICC Objection

The COTCO hearing was based on the ICC objection with a claim of duplication.
Learn More About The Duplication Claim.

At the hearing both sides had a chance to state their view of the objection and then the board members left the call and delegated on the matter.  We overcame the ICC objection and COTCO passed this motion:

COTCO supports a new activity for Tiny Houses in ASTM International and instructs ASTM staff to approach Committee E6 on Performance of Buildings for the purpose of forming a new subcommittee on Tiny Houses.

Latest Update Regarding A New ASTM Subcommittee On Tiny Houses

The secretary of COTCO gave me a positive report regarding the delegation of the board. He said support was unanimous.  The staff of ASTM has been in negotiation with the officers of E6 and has suggested a paper ballot to vote on the approval of this ASTM subcommittee on tiny houses.

E06-Performance Of Buildings

We are very excited about the possibly of a subcommittee under E06-The Performance Of Buildings because of the built-in support and expertise in the construction industry.

ASTM Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings was formed in 1946. E06 meets twice a year, usually in April and October, with approximately 240 members attending three to four days of technical meetings. Committee E06 also periodically sponsors symposiums. The committee, with a current membership of 1050, has jurisdiction of over 245 standards, published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volume 04.11 and 04.12. E06 has 18 technical subcommittees that maintain jurisdiction over these standards. Information on this subcommittee structure and E06’s portfolio of approved standards and Work Items under construction are available from the Lists of Subcommittees, Standards and Work Items below. These standards have and continue to play a preeminent role in the building industry and address issues relating to the performance of buildings, their elements, components, and the description, measurement, prediction, improvement and management of the overall performance of buildings and building related facilities.

Note: The Membership Has Grown To Over 1300 Members.

Members of the committee on performance of buildings discuss how ASTM International standards are essential to the built environment — everything from the house in which you live to the office where you work.
